Application of Ferritic Stainless Steel in Heavy Duty Freight Cars of Chinese Railways
Due to the large amount of chloride ions, sulfate ions, etc. in coal, it has strong corrosiveness to metals. Through investigation and analysis of ordinary carbon steel and atmospheric corrosion resistant steel in the past, it is found that the corrosion and thinning of freight vehicle bodies are very serious, with an average annual thinning of about 0.1mm. It is difficult to ensure that carbon steel material body wall panels are not cut or replaced during their service life.
In order to ensure that the maximum allowable axle load of the Daqin Line is 80 tons and that there is no cutting or changing of the vehicle body during the 25 year service life, further improve the efficiency of vehicle use, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and increase the comprehensive economic benefits during the vehicle service life, the truck body has been renovated, and the design of a stainless steel special coal transport gondola with a capacity of 80 tons for the 20000 ton heavy-duty train transportation on the Daqin Line has been completed.
In May 2005, Qiqihar Rail Transit Equipment Co., Ltd. completed three experimental research works: welding performance test of stainless steel materials for freight cars, fatigue reliability comparison test of welded joints between stainless steel materials and weathering steel materials, and economic analysis study of new types of freight cars made of aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and weathering steel. This marked a significant breakthrough in the application of ferritic stainless steel materials in railway freight cars. In July 2005, three prototype vehicles were completed for trial production and various appraisal tests. In August, they passed the ministerial level technical review organized by the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Railways in conjunction with the Equipment Department, and the standardization and confirmation of mass production drawings.
On November 6, 2005, a sample car department level review organized by the Transportation Department, Science and Technology Department, and Planning Department of the Ministry of Railways was passed in Taiyuan, and it was finalized as a C80B stainless steel dedicated coal transport gondola car. It agreed to mass production and arranged for Qiche Company to transfer the C80B stainless steel design drawings to Zhuzhou, Meishan, Beijing Erqi Rolling Stock Works, and Baotou Beichuang Company for synchronous mass production.
At the same time, supporting technical documents such as the TCS345 stainless steel welding process specification, quality control and inspection technical conditions, and stainless steel truck production quality certification system proposed by Qiche Company in collaboration with Harbin Welding Research Institute, Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group, and Baosteel Group have also been issued, preparing for the mass production of stainless steel trucks on Chinese railways.
